Arnim, Achim von (1781-1831), German writer. With his brother-in-law, the German Romantic Clemens Brentano, he compiled three volumes of folk poems, Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn, 1805-1808), which stand as his memorial. His collection of novellas, Der Wintergarten, show an interest in the supernatural and influenced novelists in the Romantic tradition. The unfinished novel, Die Kronenwächter (The Guardians of the Crown, 1817), helped launch the historical novel in Germany.
