Brăila, formerly Ibrăila, city in south-east Romania, capital of Brăila County on the River Danube. A busy river port, Brăila is a leading centre of the grain export trade. Industries in the city include the manufacture of flour, cement, soap, rope, and sheet steel. In the vicinity of Brăila, at Lacul Sărat (Salt Lake), there are state-owned mineral springs, among the best known in Europe. Population 216,292 (2002).
