Greek Revival

Encyclopedia Article

Greek Revival, an architectural style incorporating Greek forms and modes, that superseded the English look of late Colonial Georgian architecture in America. Until the Greek Revival style took hold, American architecture was overwhelmingly influenced by the work of the English architect Sir Christopher Wren, who designed innovative buildings in a simplified Baroque style during the 17th century. The Greek Revival style was in vogue during the first half of the 19th century. Proponents of the style included the architects Benjamin Latrobe, Robert Mills, and William Strickland.
