Windows Live® Search Results Stromboli, volcanic island, southern Italy, one of the Lipari Islands, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north-west of Messina, Sicily, with an area of about 13 sq km (5 sq mi). The island is home to two small settlements, Stromboli and Ginostra, and to one of Europe’s most active volcanoes (931 m/3,054 ft high), famous for its almost constant gas eruptions, named Strombolian activity (see also Scoria). The volcano is also a major tourist attraction, although its larger eruptions (for example in 1930, 1998, and late 2002) can be hazardous. The population of the islands numbers fewer than 500 permanent residents.
