Encyclopedia Article

Abbas (c. 566-c. 653), paternal uncle of the Prophet Muhammad and of the fourth caliph, Ali. His full name was Al-Abbas ibn al-Muttalib. A rich merchant of Mecca, he initially fought against the new religion but was converted in 629. Thereafter he staunchly supported Islam with money and arms, and he accompanied his nephew on his march on Mecca in 630. Abbas was the forebear of the Abbasid dynasty of caliphs.
