Gulf of Venezuela, formerly called Gulf of Maracaibo, inlet of the Caribbean Sea, north-western Venezuela, extending from the peninsulas of Paraguaná and Guajira to the strait by which it is connected with Lake Maracaibo. The gulf is about 240 km (150 mi) wide and about 120 km (75 mi) long.
