Ireland, National University of (Gaelic, Ollscoil na hÉireann), federal institution of higher learning, with its seat in Dublin. The university is composed of four constituent universities: University College Dublin—National University of Ireland, Dublin; University College Cork—National University of Ireland, Cork; National University of Ireland, Galway; and National University of Ireland, Maynooth, and five recognized colleges: the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland; the National College of Art and Design; the Shannon College of Hotel Management; the Institute of Public Administration; and the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy. St Angela’s College, Sligo, which offers courses in education and nursing, is also part of the university as a college of the National University of Ireland, Galway. The National University of Ireland was originally established by the Irish Universities Act of 1908, which also established the Queen's University of Belfast and dissolved the Royal University in 1909. The act created the federation between the constituent colleges that were University College, Dublin; University College, Cork; and University College, Galway. The university also included recognized colleges. University College Dublin has five colleges: arts and Celtic studies; business and law; engineering, mathematics, and physical sciences; human sciences; and life sciences. University College Cork has four: arts, Celtic studies, and social sciences; business and law; medicine and health; and science, engineering, and food science. The National University of Ireland, Galway is composed of seven faculties: arts; Celtic studies; commerce; engineering; law; medicine and health sciences; and science. The National University of Ireland, Maynooth has five: arts; Celtic studies; engineering; philosophy; and science. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has faculties in dentistry; nursing; radiology; sports and exercise medicine; and anaesthetics, as well as offering courses in postgraduate surgery, and the National College of Art and Design provides degree and postgraduate programmes in art and design education, fine art, and a range of design disciplines. The Shannon College of Hotel Management offers a diploma in International Hotel Management. The Institute of Public Administration offers a range of part-time undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and diplomas, and the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy offers qualifications in theology, philosophy, and spirituality.
