French India, former overseas territory of France, comprising four enclaves on the Indian subcontinent known officially as Établissements Français de l'Inde (French Establishments in India). In descending order of size the enclaves, called villes libres (“free cities”), were Puducherry (then known as Pondicherry), Karikal, and Yanaon, all on the south-east coast, and Mahe on the south-west coast. Pondicherry Commune was the territorial capital. The territory was ceded to India in 1956.
