Catanzaro, city in southern Italy, capital of Catanzaro Province and the Calabria Region, near the Ionian Sea. The city is an important rail junction and a centre of trade in wheat, oil, and wine. Founded in the 10th century, Catanzaro was later famous for the silks, velvet, and damask produced here. Population (1991 estimate) 103,802.
