Torres Strait, channel, between northern Australia and southern New Guinea. The channel is about 130 to 145 km (80 to 90 mi) wide, and its navigation, although possible, is dangerous. It was first charted in 1606 by Luis Vaez de Torres, a Spanish navigator.
