Manila Bay, large inlet of the South China Sea, northern Philippines, indenting the island of Luzon. The bay, 60 km (37 mi) long, may be entered through a channel 18 km (11 mi) wide, in which Corregidor is situated. On the eastern shore of the bay is the city of Manila, on the west, the Bataan Peninsula. Manila Bay is connected with Laguna de Bay by a short river on the south-east. One of the finest natural harbours in the world, Manila Bay was the scene of the destruction of the Spanish fleet in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. See also Manila Bay, Battle of
