Equator (geography)
Encyclopedia Article
Equator (geography), in geography, an imaginary line of latitude circling the surface of the Earth that is equidistant from the poles; by forming a plane that runs perpendicular to the Earth’s axis, the equator divides the Earth into the Northern hemisphere and the Southern hemisphere. The equator is the line from which latitudes are measured north or south up to 90° (the poles), the latitude of any point on the equator being 0°. The equatorial climate tends to be tropical—hot and humid.
