Compiègne, Forest of, forest in northern France, extending over 12,140 hectares (30,000 acres). Once a hunting ground for the kings of France, it is today a favourite historic site for tourists. It contains a huge 15th-century castle rebuilt in the 1850s by Napoleon III. The forest was the scene of heavy fighting during World War I and the site of the signing of armistices in 1918 (with Marshal Foch) and 1940 (in the presence of Adolf Hitler).
