Windows Live® Search Results Semmering Pass, mountain pass, eastern Austria, in the Eastern Alps, near Vienna, 980 m (3,215 ft) above sea level. The Semmering railway passes through a tunnel 1.6 km (1 mi) long, 84 m (275 ft) below the summit. The first mountain railway in the world, it went into operation immediately after the tunnel was completed in 1854. It links Gloggnitz in Lower Austria with Mürzzuschlag in Styria, and is 41 km (25 mi) long. In 1998 the railway was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
