Belle Isle

Belle Isle, granite island and strait of the same name, between the coasts of south-eastern Labrador and northern Newfoundland Island. The island, at the Atlantic entrance to the strait, rises to about 213 m (700 ft) at its highest point. It is nearly 24 km (15 mi) from either coast and has a lighthouse at its southern end. Its area is about 39 sq km (15 sq mi). It is part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The strait, which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Gulf of St Lawrence, is 121 km (75 mi) long and between 16 and 24 km (10 and 15 mi) wide. Although it is much used by transatlantic vessels from June until the end of November, floating ice and fog make navigation difficult in all seasons.
