Benelux Economic Union, formerly Benelux Customs Union, trading agreement among Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The Benelux organization came into existence on November 1, 1960, as a successor of the customs union formed on January 1, 1948. The union levies uniform tariff rates on goods from non-member countries and exempts duties on intra-Benelux trade. The fourth-largest trading bloc in the West, the union serves about 25 million people. The union served as a forerunner to the wider European Union.
