Berchtesgaden, town in south-east Germany, Bavaria, year-round tourist resort in the Bavarian Alps. The town is in a salt-mining region and has a woodcarving industry. Near Berchtesgaden is the site of the Berghof, the former residence (now demolished) of Adolf Hitler, where the Führer met British premier Neville Chamberlain in 1938. Population (1989 estimate) 7,600.
