Hartshorne, Richard (1899-1992), American geographer and educator, born in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and educated at Princeton University and the University of Chicago. He taught at the University of Minnesota (1924-1940) and the University of Wisconsin (1940-1970). An expert on political and economic geography and a pioneer of regional geography, he is particularly noted for two books: The Nature of Geography: A Critical Survey of Current Thought in the Light of the Past (1939), a monumental overview of the ideas about the nature of geography, and a sequel, Perspective on the Nature of Geography (1959).
