Boleslav II

Encyclopedia Article

Boleslav II, called The Bold (1039-1081), ruled Poland as duke (1058-1076) and as king ( 1076-1079), son of Casimir I. He maintained his family's alliance with the papacy, siding with Pope Gregory VII in his quarrel with the German King Henry IV. Like his grandfather, Boleslav I, he intervened in the affairs of the Russian state of Kiev. Boleslav is best known for having slain St Stanislas, bishop of Kraków. This act, during a dispute with the Church, united his subjects against him, and in 1079 he fled to Hungary, where he died.
