Lorient, town in north-western France, in the Morbihan Department of Brittany, at the confluence of the Scorff and Blavet rivers on the Bay of Biscay. It is a naval station and a commercial and fishing port; manufactured goods include ships, textiles, and processed fish. The community developed as a trading port in the 17th century and became a naval base in the early 19th century. Used as a key submarine base by the Germans in World War II, Lorient was devastated by Allied bombing. Population 58,300 (2005 estimate).
