Map of Lake Como

Lake Como, in Lombardy, northern Italy. It fills a depression 198 m (650 ft) above sea level, in the limestone hills of the Bernina Alps, and is sometimes called Lake Lario, an adaptation of Lacus Larius, the ancient Roman name for the lake. The principal tributary of the lake, the Adda River, enters it at the northern end and leaves it at Lecco, at the south-eastern extremity of the lake. The city of Como is at the south-western end. From the northern end to the tip of either of the two arms of the lake it is about 48 km (30 mi) long; it varies in width from 0.8 to 4 km (0.5 to 2.5 mi); and its maximum depth is about 410 m (1,345 ft). The scenery and climate around Lake Como make it a very popular holiday destination. Area, about 145 sq km (56 sq mi).
