Chimborazo, snowcapped peak, central Ecuador, in the Andes. An inactive volcano, it has an elevation of 6,310 m (20,702 ft) and is the highest point in Ecuador. The German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt explored it in 1802; in 1880 the English mountain climber Edward Whymper successfully scaled the peak. The name, from a Quechua term, means “mountain of snow”.
