Campeche, Bay of shallow bay, southern Mexico, an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, bordered by the Yucatán Peninsula on the east, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec on the south, and the state of Veracruz on the west. At its mouth the bay is about 700 km (435 mi) across. Significant petroleum deposits are located beneath the floor of the bay; large-scale oil production began in the late 1970s. Shrimping is an important industry in coastal areas. The cities of Veracruz, Campeche (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999), and Coatzacoalcos are on the bay.
