Battle of Ardennes

Encyclopedia Article

Battle of Ardennes, an inconclusive battle of World War I, fought in the Ardennes region of France. French armies, which had been positioned in the region of Stenay and along the Sambre River to meet the German threat from the east, began an offensive on August 20, 1914. As a result of serious tactical errors, the French Third Army, headed by General Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre, suffered heavy casualties. The German command failed to take advantage of its superior tactical position, and between August 23 and 25 both the French and German armies withdrew.
