Pecos, river, south-western United States, rising in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north central New Mexico, and flowing 1,183 km (735 mi) south-east to join the Rio Grande in Texas. The Pecos River drains an area of more than 64,750 sq km (more than 25,000 sq mi) and is an important source of irrigation.
