Encyclopedia Article

Ian Hamilton (1853-1947), British general, who was in charge of Allied forces in the unsuccessful Gallipoli (Dardanelles) campaign during World War I. A veteran commander who had served in Asia and Africa, Hamilton was given command of an Anglo-French force that had been formed to capture the Turkish capital, İstanbul, in 1915. He made two successive amphibious landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula, which commanded the approach to the city, but after several months of fighting failed to make any headway against the Turks and was relieved of his command.
