Dissenters

Encyclopedia Article

Dissenters, also Dissidents, people who refuse to accept the authority of, or conform to, the laws of an established Church. The term Dissenters was commonly used in 17th-century England, especially after the passing of the Toleration Act in 1689, to denote groups who separated from the Church of England. English Roman Catholics were called Recusants. After the middle of the 19th century, the terms Dissenters and Dissidents were largely replaced by Nonconformists and Free Churchmen.
