Ingolstadt, town in south central Germany, in Bavaria near Munich. Located on the River Danube, the town was an important fortress in the Middle Ages and is now highly industrialized. Ingolstadt is the terminus of three transcontinental oil pipelines; goods manufactured here include refined petroleum, motor vehicles, machinery, and electrical equipment. Historical landmarks include the medieval city walls, a 14th-century gate (the Kreuztor), and a 15th-century cathedral. Ingolstadt was chartered in 1250. The ducal castle houses a military museum. From 1472 to 1800 Ingolstadt was the seat of a noted university, which was moved to Landshut in 1800 and to Munich in 1826. Population (1990 estimate) 103,600.
