Hiero II

Encyclopedia Article

Hiero II (c. 306-c. 215 bc), tyrant of ancient Syracuse (c. 265-215 bc). From 278 to 275 bc he fought under Pyrrhus, king of Epirus, against the Roman invaders of Sicily, and after the departure of Pyrrhus in 275 bc he was chosen commander of the Syracusan army. Hiero's military successes against the Mamertines in 270 bc resulted in his election as tyrant by the grateful citizens of Syracuse. In 264 bc Hiero allied his forces with the Carthaginians in besieging the Mamertines at Messana (Messina), but the Romans defeated the Syracusan army. A year later he concluded a treaty with Rome and remained an ally thereafter. Historians describe him as a wise and just ruler.
