Map of Tisza

Tisza, river, eastern Europe, important tributary of the Danube, the chief river of Hungary. It is formed by the confluence of two streams, the Black Tisza and the White Tisza, in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine. It winds 1,287 km (800 mi) north-east, south-west, and finally south, joining the Danube in northern Serbia after running parallel to it for 483 km (300 mi). In February 2000 the waters of the river were contaminated by a cyanide spill from a mine in Romania—all life in the river was destroyed. The river was formerly famous for its fish.
