Piedmont Plateau

Encyclopedia Article

Piedmont Plateau, gently rolling upland region, eastern United States, extending from north-eastern New Jersey south to central Alabama. Also called “the Piedmont”, the plateau is the easternmost part of the great Appalachian Highland province. It is bordered on the west by the Blue Ridge Mountains and on the east by the coastal plain. The eastern boundary is marked by the fall line. Elevations are relatively low, ranging from 90 to 550 m (300 to 1,800 ft). The soils are moderately fertile; cotton and tobacco are grown in the southern part, and fruit, dairy goods, and livestock are produced in the north.
