Aletsch Glacier, glacier, southern Switzerland, largest glacier of Europe, in the Alps. It is about 18 km (11 mi) long and sweeps around the southern side of the Jungfrau in the Swiss Alps. At the eastern extremity lies a glacial lake, Märjelensee (2,350 m/7,711 ft above sea level). To the north-west rises Aletschhorn (4,195 m/13,763 ft), which was first climbed in 1859.
