Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spanish city and port in the Canary Islands, on the north-east coast of Tenerife (largest of the Canaries), capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Province. It is a major refuelling port for shipping, and its principal exports are fruit and vegetables grown on the island. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, the city is the base of a substantial tourist industry on the island. Santa Cruz de Tenerife was founded in 1494, and in 1797 Horatio Nelson lost his right arm in a battle here. Population 220,902 (2007).
