Babbitt Metal, any of several soft metal alloys used for bushes and to line bearings in order to reduce wear. The metals usually contain large amounts of tin, with smaller amounts of antimony, copper, and lead. The principal alloy consists of 89 per cent tin, 7 per cent antimony, and 4 per cent copper. Babbitt metal is named after its inventor, American Isaac Babbitt. It is also known as white metal.
