Paraguay (also spelt Paraguai), central South America, originating in the highlands of the state of Mato Grosso, western Brazil. It flows about 2,415 km (1,500 mi) south across central Paraguay to join the Paraná River, of which it is the chief tributary, at the northern border of Argentina. It is joined from the west by the Pilcomayo and Bermejo rivers. Although the river channel is subject to shifts, it is navigable for most of its course. Its chief port is Asunción, Paraguay.
