Article Outline
In the 1990s Alaska faced declining oil revenues, and its agriculture remained negligible. Despite huge coal reserves, only one coal mine operates in the state, and it exports a modest 881,000 tonnes of coal to South Korea annually. The state government has carefully nursed the wild salmon stocks so they again yield bountiful harvests. The tourist industry has increased every year since statehood, but the state's efforts to diversify its economy have not met with great success. In 2002 plans by President George W Bush to allow drilling for oil in parts of Alaska were rejected by the US Senate.
