Map of Great Hungarian Plain

Great Hungarian Plain (Hungarian, Nagy Alföld), also Great Alföld or Alföld, fertile agricultural lowland, eastern Europe, in central and south-eastern Hungary and adjacent areas of northern Serbia (part of the federation of Serbia and Montenegro) and western Romania. The plain is drained by the Tisza and Danube rivers. It has a semi-arid climate and was a stock-raising and grassland region before being irrigated and brought under cereal cultivation in the late 19th century. The Little Alföld (Hungarian, Kis Alföld) is in north-western Hungary and southern Slovakia.
