Drakensberg, South AfricaDrakensberg, South Africa

Drakensberg, also Quathlamba, mountain range, paralleling the extreme south-eastern coast of Africa. Located mostly in South Africa, it extends for about 1,125 km (700 mi) from Mpumalanga to Eastern Cape Province, and forms the eastern boundary of Lesotho and, in part, of the Free State. It is the highest portion of the eastern scarp of the South African plateau. Among its peaks are Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m/11,425 ft above sea level, the highest in southern Africa) and Mont-aux-Sources (3,299 m/10,822 ft), near which the scenic Royal Natal National Park is located. The Drakensberg Park, with its remains of San cave dwellings and rock paintings, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The range is crossed by rail at two points, Van Reenen Pass (1,646 m/5,400 ft) and Laing's Nek (1,250 m/4,100 ft).
