Courland Lagoon

Encyclopedia Article

Courland Lagoon, inlet of the Baltic Sea, along the coast of the Lithuania and the Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. It is also known as Kurskiy Zaliv (in Russian), Kuršiu Marios (in Lithuanian), and Kurisches Haff (in German). The lagoon is separated from the Baltic Sea by a narrow sandspit called Courland Spit (Russian, Kurskaya Kosa), which is about 100 km (62 mi) long and just over 3 km (2 mi) wide. The lagoon is about 90 km (56 mi) long and its total area is about 1,620 sq km (625 sq mi); in the east is the Neman River delta, in the south—the Samland Peninsula, and in the north—the port of Klaipėda.
