Ahmose II

Encyclopedia Article

Ahmose II (died 526 bc), pharaoh of Egypt (570-526 bc). Born of humble parents, he became a general and under pharaoh Apries successfully suppressed a revolt by Egyptian troops. Ahmose joined forces with the rebels, who proclaimed him king. The combined forces defeated the hired troops of Apries and dethroned him. Two years later Ahmose repulsed an attack by King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylonia. Ahmose added Cyprus to his kingdom (550 bc), made alliances with Samos and Lydia, and maintained friendly relations with Cyrene (now Shaḩḩāt, Libya) and other Greek states. He was succeeded by his son, Psamtik III, who six months later was defeated and dethroned by the Persians under Cambyses II. Egypt then became part of the Persian Empire.
