Windows Live® Search Results Texel, largest and southernmost of the West Frisian Islands, north-western Netherlands, in North Holland Province, between the North Sea and the Waddenzee. Texel, which has an area of 161 sq km (62 sq mi), is separated from the mainland by a narrow strait, called the Marsdiep. Farming and tourism are the chief economic activities. In 1653, during the First Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch admiral Maarten Tromp was killed in a naval battle with the English soldier George Monck off the coast of Texel.
