Aristippus

Encyclopedia Article

Aristippus (c. 435-c. 360 bc), Greek philosopher, who studied with Socrates in Athens and founded the Cyrenaic school of hedonism. He held that pleasure is the greatest good and pain the least. Virtue, then, is the capacity to enjoy pleasure and eschew pain. Aristippus maintained that people should dedicate their lives to the pursuit of pleasure, but that they should also exercise judgement and restraint to keep dangerous impulses in check.
