Central Valley, also Great Valley, region of central California, in the United States, comprising the valleys of the Sacramento and the San Joaquin rivers, in the north and south respectively. The valley, which is more than 640 km (400 mi) long, is almost totally enclosed by mountains and is one of the most productive agricultural regions of the United States. Large-scale irrigation projects transfer water from the humid northern half to the drier southern half.
