Spithead
Encyclopedia Article
Spithead, sheltered strait, southern England, between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight—the eastern stretch of The Solent. It is 23 km (14 mi) long by about 6 km (4 mi) in average breadth. Protected from all winds, it is a favourite anchorage of the Royal Navy, which has a major base at Portsmouth. It is sometimes called the Queen's Chamber, because of its security.
