University of Liverpool, institution of higher education in Liverpool, Merseyside, in north-western England. The university was founded by royal charter in 1881 as University College, Liverpool. Along with the precursor institutions of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Leeds it became a college of the federal Victoria University in 1884, and was granted an independent royal charter in 1903 as the University of Liverpool. It consists of six faculties: Arts; Engineering; Medicine; Science; Social and Environmental Studies; and Veterinary Science. The university’s campus is close to Liverpool city centre.
