Map of Grimsby

Grimsby, town, part of the unitary authority of North-East Lincolnshire, north-eastern England, on the River Humber near its mouth at the North Sea. Grimsby has England's biggest fish market and is a major fishing port. Other leading industries are fish-processing and the manufacture of chemicals. It is the site of the National Fishing Heritage Centre. Grimsby was a Danish settlement and is traditionally held to be the first landing site for the Danish invasions in the 8th century. The town received a charter in 1201. During the Middle Ages Grimsby was an important seaport, but it declined in importance as its harbour became blocked by silt from the River Humber. The harbour was improved and expanded in the 19th century. Population (1994 estimate) Great Grimsby District 91,000.
