Windows Live® Search Results Le Mans, town in northern France, capital of the Sarthe Department on the River Sarthe. It is an important rail junction and industrial town, with factories producing motor vehicles, agricutural and rail machinery, chemicals, textiles, and processed food. Historical landmarks include the cathedral of St Julien (begun 11th century) and the church of Notre Dame de la Couture (begun 10th century). The University of Maine (1969) is situated here. A world famous 24-hour motor race held annually here takes its name from Le Mans. Founded in pre-Roman times, Le Mans was captured by William the Conqueror in 1063. It later suffered many sieges during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) between England and France. The English king Henry II was born here. The Germans occupied the city during the Franco-Prussian War and again during World War II. Population 144,500 (2005 estimate).
