Santa Fe Trail, overland trade route, extending from Old Franklin in western Missouri to Santa Fe (in present-day New Mexico). The trail opened in 1821 and was in use almost continuously from 1822 to 1880, when a railway line reached Santa Fe. It was 1,260 km (780 mi) long and was used by up to 5,000 wagons a year at its peak.
