Federation of Malaya, former constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth of Nations, encompassing all of the Malay Peninsula south of Thailand. It was incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. It comprised the Malay States of Pahang, Perak, Johor, Kelantan, Trengganu, Kedah, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Perlis and the former Straits Settlements of Pinang and Malacca (now Melaka). Cities in Malaya included Kuala Lumpur, the federal capital; George Town (Pinang); Ipoh; Kelang (Klang); and Johor Baahru.
