Seyfert Galaxy

Encyclopedia Article

Seyfert Galaxy, type of active galaxy with an extremely brilliant nucleus that emits radio waves at a rate between that of normal galaxies and that of radio galaxies. Some also emit X-rays strongly. The first Seyfert galaxy was observed in 1943 and named after its discoverer, the American astronomer Carl Seyfert; perhaps two per cent of all galaxies are of this type. Current theory suggests that Seyferts, radio galaxies, and quasars are closely related structures.
